Trigger Point Injection

Trigger point injections are used to relieve muscle pain, spasms, and tightness. These injections target muscle knot areas where muscles are tense and painful. By injecting medicine directly into the trigger point, doctors can help calm the muscle and reduce discomfort.

Conditions Trigger Point Injections Treat

Trigger point injections are often recommended for:

  • Chronic muscle pain in the back, neck, or shoulders.
  • Muscle spasms or tightness that interfere with daily activities.
  • Pain from overuse, injury, or poor posture.

Benefits of Trigger Point Injections

  • Relief from localized muscle pain and tension.
  • Reduced muscle spasms and stiffness.
  • Improved flexibility, range of motion, and comfort.
  • Helps patients participate more easily in physical therapy or exercise.

How Trigger Point Injections Work

The injection contains an anesthetic medicine, sometimes combined with a small amount of a steroid. The anesthetic provides immediate pain relief, while the steroid helps reduce inflammation for longer-lasting results. Multiple injections may be used depending on the number and severity of trigger points.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • The procedure is done in an outpatient setting so that you can go home the same day.
  • The doctor cleans the skin over the affected muscle and inserts a small needle directly into the trigger point.
  • The injection is usually quick, often taking 10–20 minutes.
  • Some mild soreness or bruising at the injection site is normal for a day or two.

Safety & Recovery Tips

  • Rest the injected muscle for the remainder of the day.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for 24 hours.
  • Gentle stretching or massage may be helpful after soreness subsides.
  • Contact your doctor if you notice unusual swelling, redness, fever, or worsening pain. These side effects are rare but essential to report.
