Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

At University Spine Center, our pain management team offers Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, a regenerative medicine treatment that uses your body’s own healing power to repair damaged tissues. A concentration of platelets is injected into injured joints, tendons, muscles, or areas affected by facet arthritis to help the body heal naturally.

What PRP Therapy Can Treat

PRP is commonly used for:

  • Joint injuries and arthritis
  • Tendon injuries, such as rotator cuff or Achilles tendon problems
  • Muscle strains and ligament injuries

By targeting the source of the problem, PRP can reduce pain, calm inflammation, and promote tissue regeneration without the need for surgery.

What to Expect

The procedure begins with a small blood sample taken from the patient. The blood is then processed to concentrate the platelets, which are rich in growth factors. The concentrated PRP is carefully injected into the injured area using imaging guidance if needed. The procedure is minimally invasive and usually takes less than an hour.

Patients may notice gradual improvement over several weeks as the body’s natural healing process stimulates tissue repair. Multiple treatments may be recommended depending on the injury or condition.

Safety & Recovery Tips

  • Mild swelling, redness, or soreness at the injection site is normal and typically resolves within a few days.
  • Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for a few days to a week as advised by your doctor.
  • Follow all post-procedure instructions to maximize healing and recovery.
  • Attend follow-up appointments to track progress and determine if additional treatments are needed.
