Electromyography (EMG) is a test that measures the electrical activity of your muscles to see how well they respond to nerve signals. At University Spine Center, our specialists, including Dr.Sophia Yae,DO, use EMG testing to identify the cause of muscle weakness, numbness, or pain and to detect any underlying nerve or muscle issues.
EMG helps doctors diagnose nerve compression, nerve injuries, and neuromuscular disorders. It is also used to evaluate chronic pain affecting the arms, legs, or spine. By providing clear, objective information about how muscles and nerves are functioning, EMG allows your care team to create a precise and effective treatment plan.
During an EMG test, small electrodes are placed on your skin, and a thin needle electrode may be gently inserted into certain muscles. The test records the electrical activity when muscles are at rest and when they contract. Most patients feel only mild discomfort during the needle placement. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of muscles tested.
EMG testing at University Spine Center provides a clear understanding of muscle and nerve function, helping doctors target treatments that relieve pain, restore strength, and improve daily function.
