Facet Joint Injections

At University Spine Center, our pain management experts, Pamela D’Amato, MD, and Sophia Yae, DO, offer facet joint injections to relieve back and neck pain caused by irritated or inflamed spinal joints.

Facet joints are the small joints located between the vertebrae of the spine, which support and stabilize movement. Over time, these joints can become painful due to arthritis, injury, or normal wear and tear (degeneration).

During a facet joint injection, a steroid medication and a numbing agent are injected directly into the joint. This procedure helps reduce inflammation, calms irritated nerves, and blocks pain signals.

Many patients experience relief from stiffness, improved mobility, and reduced back or neck pain, allowing them to enjoy their daily activities more fully. Additionally, for some patients, facet joint injections can help confirm the exact source of their pain, guiding further treatment if necessary.
