Lumbar/Sacral RFA

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a procedure that helps relieve chronic lower back pain. It targets the small nerves near the facet joints in the lumbar (lower back) and sacral spine. These nerves send pain signals to the brain, and RFA uses heat from radio waves to “turn off” these signals, providing long-lasting relief.

Conditions RFA Treats

Lumbar or sacral RFA is often recommended for:

  • Persistent lower back pain caused by facet joint degeneration or arthritis.
  • Chronic lumbar conditions that have not improved with medications, injections, or physical therapy.
  • Pain radiating into the hips or thighs due to irritated facet joints.

Benefits of RFA

  • Long-lasting pain relief, often lasting several months.
  • Reduced muscle tension and spasms in the lower back.
  • Improved mobility, flexibility, and posture, making daily activities easier.
  • Decreased reliance on pain medications.
  • It can be performed after medial branch blocks confirm which nerves are causing pain.

How RFA Works

  • A small needle is guided near the target nerve using X-ray or fluoroscopy.
  • Radio waves create heat that interrupts pain signals from the nerve.
  • The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes.
  • The treated nerve does not grow back immediately, so relief can last for several months. Some patients may repeat the procedure if needed.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • RFA is done in an outpatient setting so that you can go home the same day.
  • You will lie on your stomach while the doctor cleans and numbs the area.
  • Using imaging guidance, the needle is placed near the nerve, and radiofrequency energy is applied.
  • Mild soreness at the injection site is normal for a day or two.

Safety & Recovery Tips

  • Rest the day of the procedure, but light walking is fine.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for the first 24 hours.
  • Use ice if the area feels sore.
  • Most patients return to normal activities within 24 hours.
  • Contact your doctor if you notice unusual numbness, weakness, fever, or severe headache. These side effects are rare but essential to report.
