Carotid Angiogram

A carotid angiogram is a diagnostic imaging test that helps doctors see the carotid arteries in the neck and check for narrowing or blockages. This test is important for guiding treatment decisions and preventing strokes.

How the Procedure Works

  • A thin catheter is gently inserted into a blood vessel, usually in the arm or groin, and guided to the carotid artery.
  • A contrast dye is injected to make the arteries clearly visible on X-ray images.
  • The images show any narrowing, blockage, or plaque buildup, helping doctors plan the best treatment.
  • The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia, keeping patients comfortable.

Why a Carotid Angiogram May Be Recommended

  • To check for narrowing or blockages in the carotid arteries.
  • For patients who have had a mini-stroke (TIA) or other symptoms of reduced blood flow to the brain.
  • To help plan treatments like surgery or stenting if a blockage is detected.

Benefits of a Carotid Angiogram

  • Provides a detailed view of the carotid arteries.
  • Helps doctors determine the best treatment for preventing strokes.
  • Minimally invasive and generally safe with a short recovery time.
  • Can detect problems early, allowing for timely treatment.

What to Expect During Recovery

  • Most patients can go home the same day after the procedure.
  • A small bandage will be placed where the catheter was inserted.
  • Mild bruising or soreness at the insertion site is normal for a few days.
  • Light activity is usually allowed immediately, but strenuous activity is avoided for 24–48 hours.

Safety & Recovery Tips

  • Follow all instructions from your healthcare team, including any activity restrictions.
  • Keep the insertion site clean and dry.
  • Watch for increased pain, swelling, or bleeding and contact your doctor if these occur.
  • Stay hydrated and follow your doctor’s guidance for any medications.
